Free State on efforts to address electricity debt

National and Provincial Government join efforts to address electricity debt receives high priority

A critical meeting to resolve the electricity challenge affecting three municipalities in the Free State took place on 6 October between three affected municipalities, Free State Provincial Treasury, COGTA national and provincial, NERSA, Eskom and National Treasury as had been promised in our media statement dated 3 October 2014.

The meeting thrashed out challenges relating to and contributing to electricity debt in municipalities. As a consequence of this meeting, a task team consisting of representatives from these key stakeholders has been set-up to focus on resolving the issues at hand.

The team has two weeks to further refine the proposals and present them for final discussion with Eskom with a view to address the matter of electricity debt.

Resolutions taken and action plan proposed, once presented to Eskom and upon agreement with Eskom on actions to be taken regarding payment of debt, we would be in a position to communicate our resolutions and concrete action plan to address the debt, and overall financial management for an integrated and sustainable solution that will ensure that we steer away from this challenge.
