Free State District Sports Indabas

Background

The Minister of Sport and Recreation, in his endeavour to develop sport and encourage transformation of sport in South Africa, indicated the need to host the National Sport Indaba to provide a fresh perspective and impetus on transformation, a perspective that posits equality, unity, access, and excellence at the centre of our national discourse.

This was further based on the principles which encourage cooperation with one another in mutual trust and good faith, therefore fostering friendly relations, assistance and support, information sharing, consultations on matters of common interest, co-ordination of actions and legislation and adhering to agreed procedures and promoting corporate governance. During the deliberation with various stakeholders and role players involved in sport movement, it is expected that during the Indaba we will collectively look at all challenges, frustrations and successes in sport.

The Sport Indaba is aimed at promoting and facilitating inter-governmental relations as well as providing appropriate mechanism and procedures to facilitate, finalise and approve the first ever official National Sport and Recreation Plan for the country in August 2011.

The Free State Sport Indaba is part of the already planned nine provincial Indabas scheduled for the July month, which will culminate in the staging of national Indaba. The envisaged theme of the Indaba is “from policy practice” and the tagline: “more than just playing”.

Objectives of the Indabas:
