Rumours on the "arrest" of Mrs Mathabo Leeto
The Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will like to dispel the rumours that she has been arrested by the Hawks. MEC Leeto will like to state in no uncertain terms that she was not arrested but is simply making an appearance in court as arranged with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Two weeks ago Mrs. Leeto was notified by the NPA of the need to appear in court today (16 February) in view of the pending reinstatement of the charges. The charges and appearance therefore are in relation to the 2013 case of Matjhabeng Local Municipality where she was the Executive Mayor. Mrs. Leeto was a witness in this case and charges against her were subsequently withdrawn following the court trial in 2016.
Mrs Leeto will like to underscore her respect for the rule of law. She therefore welcomed the directive by the NPA for her to appear in court and will fully cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and the courts.
"I'm ready for my day in court. Appearance in court does not translate into one being necessarily guilty. Courts were established for the sole purpose of determining the guilt or innocence of individuals", stated Mrs. Leeto.
