Fraudsters accused of defrauding Department of Labour to plead

The case against two men accused of defrauding the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund was today (14 November) postponed to February 22, 2012 for plea and trial management.

The two co-defendants Samuel Mfeleng and Maxwell Ramaphosa who previously worked for the Compensation Fund appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate Court. Their case was transferred to the Magistrate Court after their fellow co-accused; Jurry Sehunoe (33), a physiotherapist operating from Rustenburg in North West broke ranks and pleaded guilty to defrauding the Department of Labour of about R5 million.

The trial of the three accused was initially held at the Pretoria Specialised Crime Court where Sehunoe was found guilty. But, in a separation of trial Mfeleng and Ramaphosa’s case has since been transferred to the Pretoria Magistrate Court.

Sehunoe, who made an about u-turn is to be sentenced in January 2012. He faces a minimum of 15 years behind the bars. Sehunoe was found guilty of 15 counts of fraud and 26 counts of money laundering.

Mfeleng and Ramaphosa are out on an extended bail of R3 000. They also face 15 counts of fraud and 26 counts of money laundering.

The men are alleged to have defrauded the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund by chandelling payments to doctors’ accounts for unperformed work.

The Compensation Fund is a public entity under the Department of Labour. The Fund provides cover for workers injured during work or who sustain diseases during the course of occupation.
