Four injured in crash outside Mahikeng

Four people were injured in a head on collision involving a sedan and a police double cab bakkie outside Mahikeng on the Mahikeng-Lotlhakane road in the North West province on Saturday morning.

The crash occurred at around 6h00 near Sundowns football ground in Majemantsho village. It is alleged that a Toyota Tazz with three occupants that was heading towards Setlopo village from Mahikeng was overtaking a Toyota Quantum Combi pulling a trailer when it collided with the police vehicle from Makgobistad that was driving in the opposite direction on the right lane.

Empty and full beer bottles found in the Toyota Tazz raises suspicion that alcohol and speeding might have caused the accident. The collision could have resulted in fatalities had the police vehicle not swerved to the left to avoid the oncoming vehicle.

The rescue team had to use the jaws of life to free the 29 year old driver who was critically injured from the wreckage of the Toyota Tazz. A male and a female passenger from the Tazz, a policeman from the police vehicle all in their 20’s were rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital with minor injuries.

In wishing the injured road users and the policeman a speedy recovery, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono appealed to motorists to reduce speeding, drive with caution whenever they are changing lanes and overtake only when it is safe to do so.

Police are investigating a case of driving without a license, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, drunken driving, reckless and or negligent driving against the driver of the Toyota Tazz.
