Four people died and two others were seriously injured in a head on collision involving two cars on the N18 Mahikeng-Vryburg road in the North West province on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred around 10h30am near the Kraaipan Mine, about eight kilometres from Setlagole.
It is alleged that a Ford Focus which was pulling a trailer and headed towards Vryburg collided head on with a VW City Golf which was driving towards Mahikeng as it overtook another vehicle on a straight lane.
The 24 year old driver of the VW City Golf and a male passenger in this early 60’s died on impact while a female passenger in her early 20’s and a boy in his early teens died while being attended to by paramedics at the scene of the accident.
Two boys aged estimated to be 10 and four respectively who were also passengers in the VW City Golf were rushed to Bophelong Provincial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford Focus survived the accident with no injuries. Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and or reckless and or negligent driving.
In conveying condolences to the families of the families who lost their loved ones in the accident and wishing the injured passengers a speedy recovery, North West Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr. Magome Masike appealed to motorists to reduce speeding and to share the road responsibly with other road users.
