Four accidents that happened over the Long Easter Weekend in the North West province have claimed eight lives since Thursday. According to the North West Traffic Authorities, most accidents happened in the early hours of the morning which are suspected to have been caused by speed, fatigue and not being extra careful on the road.
According to authorities, a male drive died on the scene after a white polo collided with a bridge on the N4 next to Majakaneng, in the early hours on Friday. In another accident, three people died, when a minibus taxi collided head on with a Golf on the R501 road between Potchefstroom and Carletonville. One male who was the minibus taxi driver and two female passengers died on the scene.
In another horrible accident, police are still investigating the course of an accident that happed in Potchefstroom on the Nelson Mandela drive where three people died following collision between two vehicles. According to reports the two vehicles caught fire after the collision.
Meanwhile Koster police also reported an accident where a cyclist was fatally wounded after being knocked by a car on the Koster-Swartreggens road on Friday.
Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison MEC Nono Maloyi pleaded with motorist to be extra careful especially in the early hours of the morning. “Please rest after every two hours of driving, Keep a safe following distance and overtake when it’s safe to do so,” advised Maloyi.
