Former South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) journalist dies and 7 other road users injured in collision

A collision between a taxi and a government vehicle claimed the life of 38 year old former journalist, Solly Kgarimetsa and seriously injured 7 other road users at Moruleng village near Mogwase in the North West province on Saturday afternoon.

Speeding is suspected to have contributed towards causing the accident that allegedly occurred around 2:00pm at Lesetlheng Section.

It is alleged that the government vehicle had swerved into the lane of an oncoming taxi that was driving from Magong towards Lesetleng to avoid driving into the back of another bakkie that was turning to the left. Kgarimetsa died at the scene of the accident while the driver survived the accident with minor injuries. The rescue team had to use the Jaws of Life to free him from the wreckage.

The driver of the taxi and six passengers were critically injured and rushed by paramedic to Moses Kotane Provincial Hospital in Ledig.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the family of the passenger who lost his life in the accident and also wish the injured road users a speedy recovery.

MEC Mohono is concerned as to whether the government vehicle in which Kgarimetsa died was not being abused. Kgarimetsa was currently employed by the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela Tribal Authority (BBKTA) as a spokesperson.
