Five un-roadworthy minibus taxis were discontinued around Itsoseng in the North West Province as Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities intensified zero tolerance road traffic law enforcement operations over the weekend.
In one instance, a Gazelle minibus taxi pulled over by a traffic officer on Sunday and could only stop a hundred meters away due to brake failure.
The discontinued minibus taxis were discontinued for defective steering mechanisms, faulty brakes, loose electrical wires and worn out tyres.
The blitz was part of Project 15/15 maximum visibility and intensified zero tolerance enforcement operations targeting vehicle fitness, speeding, drunken driving and load management announced recently by North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono.
The operations are part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan and Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign aimed at reducing road fatalities by 4% over the festive season.
