The Hawks in Limpopo have on Thursday arrested five Department of Health officials for fraud and theft which amounted to over R10 million.
The suspects; a State Accountant, the Chief Provisioning Officer, Deputy Manager: Finance, Supply Chain Deputy Manager and the department’s Deputy Manager are alleged to have fraudulently awarded tenders to companies in which they and their close family members had interests in.
Three of the suspects were members of a Tender Committee at a Nursing College in Limpopo and they did not disclose to the employer (Department of Health) their interest in the companies which they awarded tenders to.
The committee allegedly did not hold any formal adjudication process during the commission of the crimes. The suspects would obtain and fraudulently use particulars of other people’s companies for cover coating where prices were inflated and tenders were awarded to their companies.
The five suspects, three men and two women, will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon.
