Five die and three seriously injured in North West road accidents

Three people were killed in a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway on Saturday morning, the first day of the new year.

It is alleged that a Toyota Corolla which was driving towards Rustenburg with four passengers at around 5:30 am, encroached into the lane of a VW Polo as it overtook another vehicle near the Brits off-ramp, resulting in a head-on collision.

The male driver of the Toyota Corolla, aged 34, as well as a male and a female passenger, also in their thirties, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the VW Polo, as well as two female passengers, one from the Toyota Corolla and the other from the VW Polo, survived the accident with serious injuries. The three survivors were rushed to Brits Provincial Hospital by paramedics.

In another road accident suspected to have been caused by fatigue, a 35 year old male driver died after his VW Golf 3 overturned on the N18 Stella-Vryburg road at around 7:30 am. The accident occurred about six kilometres from Vryburg towards Stella. The driver who was driving alone in his vehicle died on the spot.

A male pedestrian in his mid 40s also died on new year’s eve after he was knocked down by a vehicle on the N12 near Alabama outside Klerksdorp. The accident occurred around 8:00 pm.

Acting MEC for the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Dr Magome Masike, wishes to convey his condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the accidents and wish the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
