Fishery performance reviews roadshow to commence for cluster C and D commercial fisheries sectors

The Department of Environmental Affairs’ marine and coastal management branch is embarking on a four-week long roadshow for the cluster D and C fisheries sectors along the South African coastline from Monday the 16 November 2009 until Friday 11 December 2009 in an attempt to ensure the participation of every long-term fishing rights holder. The cluster C and D sectors include West Coast Rock Lobster (Nearshore); Hake Handline; Traditional Linefish and Netfish.

The roadshow forms part of the performance reviews of long-term right holders in seventeen fishing sectors in South Africa. Participation of all right holders is compulsory. The performance reviews are aimed to ensure that the objectives of the fisheries are being met in terms of maintaining or improving transformation; the creation of an environment for investment and job creation; and supporting the economic viability and environmental sustainability of the fisheries.

All right holders in the affected sectors are expected to attend an interview where departmental officials will gather information in respect of the criteria upon which right holders’ performance will be assessed. Provision is made for right holders to engage in the language of their choice. All Right Holders have been informed of this initiative through a variety of media.

A Rights Verification Unit (RVU) has been established for the purpose of investigating irregularities which were reported to an anonymous tip-off line opened by the department earlier in the year. It is hoped that this initiative will contribute towards eradicating a range of allegations.
