First council sitting for newly-elected councilors

Nineteen local municipalities in the North West province will hold their first council sittings on Tuesday, 31 May 2011, following the successful hosting of the fourth democratic local government elections.

New members of the council, made up of the Speaker, Executive Mayor or Mayor, Member of Executive Committee, Members of the Mayoral Committee and a Chief Whip, will serve a five-year term.

Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC say councilors must hit the road running, promises must be kept and government service-offering must improve to the satisfaction of communities.

“The bottom line is that we need to see all communities benefiting from municipal services such as basic clean water, electricity, sanitation, refuse removal, as well as accessing economic opportunities presented to them,” says MEC Sebegoe.

“We want to create a province that is prosperous, healthy, clean with a strong sense of community in which people are proud to live, work, visit and do business to grow in a sustainable way,” he explained.

Four district Municipalities, Ngaka Modiri Molema, Bojanala, Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati will sit on Friday, 3 June 2011 to elect their respective council members.

These inaugural council sittings will be observed by members of the provincial executive committee, including Premier Thandi Modiselle, who will be at the Chamber of Mafikeng Local Municipality tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the department has deployed personnel to oversee the sittings of new councils in all municipalities.
