The Western Cape is a safer place after a total of 2136 firearms were destroyed at a plant in Saldanha during our frequent firearm destruction programme. Smoke and melted metal are all that remained from firearms comprising all calibres, as well as homemade arms commonly referred to as zip-guns when the furnace was switched off.
These firearms were confiscated during police operations, but also included those which were voluntarily surrendered to SAPS. Apart from the firearms, a total of 2 000 knifes and other dangerous weapons used to inflict bodily harm were also destroyed.
Firearms contribute to the majority of the violence on our streets, and our many clampdowns to unarm criminals will eventually reward us with a safer environment.
