The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development wishes to announce that the fire which broke out at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday (19th October) at about 9h00, has been contained. The extent of damage caused by the fire is still yet to be determined. The forensic investigation team from the police has commenced their investigation into the cause of the fire.
At present, the Department has put measures in place to ensure that service delivery is not compromised by this unfortunate occurrence. Arrangements have been made to move some matters to the Polokwane High Court, ensuring the continued delivery and access to justice services.
The Regional Court President is also investigating the possibility of moving some regional court matters to Seshego and Mankweng Magistrates Courts. The Judge President will be approached to request that other matters be heard in the circuit courts in the various districts in Limpopo.
The Department is working closely with the Department of Public Works to identify a suitable building for administrative staff to continue rendering services such as maintenance; domestic violence; and small claims courts. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the regional office of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in Polokwane on 015 287 2000, regarding any matters that were pending before the Polokwane magistrate’s court.
Information pertaining to any adjustments made to ensure that the delivery of justice services continues will be communicated as it becomes available.
