Fire leaves trail of havoc and closes North West roads

North West Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities on Tuesday afternoon advised motorists to avoid the N14 between Ventersdorp and Carletonville, and use alternative routes as the road was closed due to a raging veld fire that left havoc in its trail.

The N12 between Potchefstroom and Carletonville, and the N14 the road between Potchefstroom and Viljoenskroon, was also closed for over two hours because of the fire but the N14 between Ventersdorp and Carletonville will remain closed to avoid accidents.

Though the cause of the fire has not been established, unconfirmed reports are that a tanker might have caught fire near Klerkskraal. Trafffic officers, rescue teams and Fire and Emergency vehicles could not assess the area to establish the cause of the fire as it was fuelled by strong winds.

Motorists are advised that the road will remain closed throughout the night to avoid further accidents as visibility is affected by the dense smoke. As a result of the smoke, three vehicles were reportedly involved in a collision in which no one sustained injuries near Makokskraal towards Coligny.
