Finance Career Fair and exhibition assists learners to prepare for life after school

Learners in and around the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Municipality had an opportunity to learn more about the South African job market during a one-day career fair and exhibition held in Volkrust today, Friday 31 August 2012.

Mpumalanga Department of Finance in partnership with Xstrata Coal, National Institute of Higher Education and Eskom hosted the Finance Career Fair and Exhibition which attracted close to 1 000 learners and educators.

A range of government agencies and companies were amongst those who shared information about possible career opportunities with the learners at the Finance Career Fair and Exhibition.

Addressing learners and other attendances during the event, MEC of Finance, Mrs Pinky Phosa urged learners to pursue the careers that will make Mpumalanga a great province.

“We must contribute to all endeavours to help the learners to choose the school subjects that match their career aspirations and that which can bring sustainable development in the province.

“At the Provincial level, we have agreed that the allocation of bursaries in the province must respond to the Provincial Human Resource Development Strategy and Mpumalanga Economic Growth Path.

“Accordingly, we ensured that the fields of accountancy, information technology and auditing are considered in the provincial bursary scheme this year,” said MEC Phosa.

She also urged all stakeholders to work together to improve the education of African children.

“Our clarion call is that as stakeholders - business community, school governing bodies, parents, educators, learners and individuals – we must exercise our responsibilities to ensure that African child gets a decent education and is also guided to fulfil his or her career goal.

“We must therefore accept the responsibility to ensure that all learners are fully aware of the subject choices that can help them to realise their career goals. To leave career guidance to the educators only is clearly not a sustainable choice,” she added.
