Fields wins on youth involvement in road safety

Articulating causes of road traffic crashes as among the leading causes of preventable deaths of young people worldwide and support for the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has earned learners from Fields College in Rustenburg a place in the North West Provincial Road Safety Debate Competition to be held next week. Their qualification follows vigorous debates in which they emerged as winners at the district level of the competition held in Rustenburg on Friday.

The Rustenburg based Fields College debating team showcased profound understanding of road safety issues and intelligent debating skills to merge triumphant against Malefo High School from Tweelagte in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality and the Micha Kgasi High School from Kgabalatsane in the Madibeng Local Municipality.

North West MEC Human Settlements, Public Safety and Laison, Desbo Mohono says that young people have a role to play in advocating and networking with their peers on the five pillars of the global plan on road safety which focus on road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users and improved crash response.

MEC Mohono emphasised that the involvement of learners will ensure that the objectives of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety and Global Plan on Road Safety are met.

She highlighted that the objectives of the annual road safety debate completion is to encourage learners to be aware of road safety issues, teach learners to take responsibility for road safety issues that affect their communities and develop and enhance learner’s presentation, communication and listening skills.

The road safety debate programme is one of the flagship projects of the Road Traffic Management Corporation coordinated by the road safety directorate of the public safety branch of the department in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.
