The age group with the highest percentage fatalities is between the ages of 25 to 29 years, with a total of 13.47 percent of which 2.66 percent are females and 10.82 percent males. This is followed by the age group of 30 to 34 with a total of 13.47 percent of which 2.45 percent are females and 11.03 percent males.
Over the 12 months period starting from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009 the number of fatalities decreased by 4.23 percent on the same period the previous year (from 14 283 to 13 679). Fatal crashes also decreased by 5.33 percent over the same period the previous year.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation warns that behind these numbers and percentages human lives are lost. We lose family members and friends in road fatalities and something can be done to eradicate this fate. It is everyone’s responsibility to obey the rules of the road and behave responsibly on the roads.
This year we call for ALL South Africans to abide by the following slogan during the festive season: “Safety on the road is my responsibility”.
