Fatal training incident at the Infantry School-Oudtshoorn

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans and the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, regrettably announce the passing of a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who was fatally injured following a shooting incident during training on Thursday, 12 November 2009, at approximately 09h35.

Members of the Senior Infantry Non-Commissioned Officers' Course were busy with Crowd Control Training at Kansasvlakte (Oudtshoorn) when one of the learners shot Corporal (Cpl) Tuis Dimakatso Malitisi (36) of Regiment Christiaan Beyers in Polokwane. The Cpl was immediately evacuated to Oudtshoorn Provincial Hospital and was declared dead on arrival.

An investigation by South African Police Service (SAPS) and a Board of Inquiry by South African National Defence Force has since been convened. Funeral arrangements of the deceased will be announced once confirmed by their next of kin.

Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, the Acting Secretary for Defence, Mr Tsepe Motumi, the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Godfrey Ngwenya and Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Solly Shoke have extended their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
