Farm workers get salary rise

Farmers should brace themselves for a farm workers’ salary increase tomorrow, 1 March, through the Department of Labour’s annual adjustment of the sector’s minimum wages.

Through the revised minimum wages, employers are expected to pay workers a R1 375, 94 per month or an hourly rate of R7.51 cents, a 4.5 percent increase from the current minimum wage.

According to the Sectoral Determination for Farm Workers, workers should not work for more than 45 hours a week and should not work more than nine hours a day for more than five days a week. Employees who work on Sunday or public holidays should be paid double the hourly rate as outlined on the sectoral determination.

Employers are also urged to ensure that their workers are registered with Unemployment Insurance Fund and that their contributions are up to date.
