North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono, has called on employees in her department to explore the salient features of the indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions of generations that came before in order to understand how they have contributed towards shaping their lives. The employees joined the rest of South Africans in celebrating heritage month by displaying their diverse cultures at a departmental event held in Mahikeng on Friday.
"Our indigenous cultures are tools we can use to shape our lives and further heal our broken spirit as nation and bring back social stability that is threatened by crime, violence against women and children," MEC Mohono emphasised in a speech delivered on her behalf.
Mohono called upon communities to collaborate with police and crime prevention structures in creating a safe, secured, clean, and habitable environment as part of recognising Heritage Month.
"Living in a safe, secured, clean, and habitable environment helps in restoring people's dignity, and that is therefore part of our heritage," she stressed.
Mohono urged communities to refocus their energies and work with police and crime prevention structures to clear all identified crime hot spot areas in the province and further to keep their houses clean and in a good state, as to ensure that they protect and preserve their own heritage.
"Heritage is the foundation from which we are working to rebuild our society and it presents us with an opportunity to pay respect to many cultures, languages, traditions diversity of heritages that make up our national identity. It is a celebration which demonstrates the extraordinary riches of the South African social fabric," concluded Mohono.
