Employment and Labour registers ex-mineworkers for unclaimed benefits in Pixley Ka Seme district

Department of Employment and Labour target ex-mineworkers for registration of unclaimed benefits in Pixley Ka Seme district

The Department of Employment and Labour, Northern Cape through the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) will be casting its spotlight to the ex-mineworkers in the areas of Colesberg, De Aar and Prieska from 04-07 November 2019.

The campaign, which is aimed at ex-mineworkers who left employment in the mines prior to 01 April 2002, has been successfully implemented in other parts of the Province since last year. The latest focus will be in the Pixley Ka Seme District with an intention to register potential applicants from towns like Noupoort, Hanover, Richmond, Philipstown, Hopetown, Victoria West, Britstown and others in the district.

“As a province we are elated with the significant impact we have made to assist our unemployed and poverty stricken people with this sought after relief from UIF and we are proud to announce that since the inception of the project we managed to process 5403 claims which amounted to R20 884 813.85 (twenty million eight hundred and eighty four thousand eight hundred and thirteen rands and eighty five cents) in unclaimed benefits to ex-mineworkers and more claims are being processed at rapid pace,” said Zolile Albanie, Chief Director: Provincial Operations for Northern Cape.

The Department of Employment and Labour as the agent charged with responsibility of tracing and paying these ex-mineworkers urges all potential applicants to bring along any or all of the following documents for verification:

  • Identity document
  • Access card (from previous mine employer)
  • IRP 5 (from the previous mine employer)
  • Old Blue card
  • Previous salary advice
  • Or any proof of mine employment (including “Makhulu’s kop” card, Dompas or TEBA records)

This registration is done in line with the Peoples’ Assembly which was held in Mbizana, Eastern Cape. A motion was tabled in the National Assembly on 19 September 2007 for Parliament to establish a committee that will look at issues of ex-mineworkers. We further remind our ex-mineworkers and potential applicants who missed the opportunity during the campaign to visit their nearest Labour Centre for their applications.

The Department of Employment and Labour reiterate that the above mentioned services are rendered free of charge and potential applicants and the general public must be wary of any information regarding the ex-mineworkers which come from other sources and always verify it by calling this number 0800 843 843.
