A Ficksburg domestic employer was convicted today and fined R3 000 or six months imprisonment by the Ficksburg Magistrate Court for attempting to bribe a Labour Inspector.
Ishmail Ahmed who was caught in the act by the Organised Crime Unit, the Hawks, early this year pleaded guilty of attempting to bribe a Labour Inspector with R800 to make the case file of underpaymentof wages lodged by his two domestic workers disappear.
The women had reported to the Department of Labour that the employer allegedly paid them R170 each instead of R1 506,35 per month as determined by the Sectoral Determination for Domestic Workers.
The Chief Director Provincial Operations in the Free State, Marsha Bronkhorst has commended the successful conviction. “This conviction will go a long way in warning employers who think that they can contravene the law and get away by bribing our officials.”
The Department has meanwhile retrieved an amount for R4940, 62 in outstanding wages owed to the workers by this employer.
