Eleven killed in KwaZulu-Natal road crash

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has reiterated that the commitment of all role players to enhance commuter safety in South Africa is paramount.

The Minister’s comments follow another road crash involving a mini-bus taxi earlier today, 11 August 2011, in which eleven people were killed.

According to KwaZulu-Natal Traffic Authorities, 10 adults and one child were killed in an accident between a truck and mini bus taxi on the N2 near Mandeni. Several others sustained multiple injuries.

“We want to convey condolences to the families of those killed in this horrific road crash near Mandeni today, and wish those injured a speedy recovery. We want to reiterate that the commitment of all role-players to enhance commuter safety in South Africa is paramount.

The safety of commuters is non negotiable, and public transport operators and drivers must not compromise the safety of passengers. We are pleading with all South Africans to take personally the fight against road deaths and to work together to bring down road deaths in the country, particularly during this global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”, said Minister Ndebele.

As part of government’s new National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP), from 1 October 2010 to 31 July 2011, 46 843 unroadworthy vehicles (majority of which are buses and taxis) were discontinued from use. More than 11 million (11,745,526) vehicles and drivers have been checked, 4,847,526 fines issued for various traffic offences and 17 758 drunk drivers arrested.
