Electoral Commission on results of Municipal By-elections held on 25 October 2023

During the By-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces, an Independent Candidate won a seat. The African National Congress (ANC) retained a seat and won another seat. The Democratic Alliance (DA) also retained a seat.

The new Independent Candidate councillor is:

  • Jacobus Cornelius Stoltz, in Ward 04 Lekwa Municipality – MP305, Mpumalanga. The Independent candidate won the seat previously held by the Vryheidsfront Plus in the 2021 Municipal Elections. The Independent candidate won with, 71,97% of the total votes cast, compared to 37,14% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 47,90%.

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Siyabonga Nala, in Ward 09 EThekwini Municipality – ETH, KwaZulu-Natal. The ANC won a seat previously held by the DA in the 2021 Municipal with 70,34% of the total votes cast, compared to 35,45% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46,13%.
  • Andrew Siphiwe Mhlanga, in Ward 06  Thaba Chweu Municipality – MP321, Mpumalanga. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 44,71% of the total votes cast, compared to 78,81% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 44,57%. 

The new DA councillor is:

  • Arthur Gerald Goslin, in Ward 23 Ekurhuleni Municipality– EKU, Gauteng. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 96,44% of the total votes cast compared to 84,96% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 21,55%.
