Elderly victims of forced removals in MacLean Town to get new homes

Elderly people who  were dispossessed of their property and land in Maclean town when the area was declared a White Group Area in 1970 will get new homes from the Eastern Cape Government.

MEC Helen Sauls-August will handover houses to  elderly people in Maclean Town where 77 families dispossessed of their land in 1970 will get their new homes on completion of the project. The elderly are aged between 80 to 90 years.
Maclean Town is a small town approximately 40 km northwest of East London.

Black people previously owned and occupied erven in Maclean town. During 1970, the town was declared a white Group Area. Erven owned by black persons were expropriated, and some of the black residents were moved to the Mpongo location at Chalumna. After the black residents were removed, the state sold all erven to White Owners.

Twenty four (24) women contractors have been appointed to build 77 housing units at an amount of over R5 million rand. Coega Development Corporation provides project management and Mentorship support services to these emerging contractors. Adjacent to the project is the youth training programme where it is envisaged that youth may be absorbed into the project on completion of training.

Macleantown is a completed land restitution project project, as such new houses needed to be built for the families’ dispossessed of their land and property in 1970.
