Elderly rape victim to spend Christmas in new home

A ninety-year-old rape victim received a unique and newly-built sandstone house as an early Christmas gift that will forever change her life. The fully furnished house was handed over to the partially blind beneficiary of the Each-One-Settle-One programme by two housing developers in partnership with the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison in Chaneng outside Rustenburg in the North West province on Thursday afternoon.

The make-over experience from the dilapidated structure to the new sandstone house with a technologically advanced one litre flush toilet system has left the beneficiary speechless and the envy of her neighbours.

“This Christmas will forever be a memorable one for us. In our wildest of imaginations we never thought that my sister’s ordeal could be responded to with such an impact to restore her dignity,” said 88-year-old- Buti Mogodielo, the younger brother who lives with the rape victim.

Letamos Business Enterprises, a housing development company owned by Violet Lekgothwane donated beds, sofas, kitchen unit, fridge, stove and a micro-oven. The furnisher came with bedding and curtains for all the rooms.

The Ward Councillor, Michael Mhlungu donated food parcels for the indigent family of two to enjoy their Christmas in their home.

The two bedroomed house with an open plan kitchen and dining-room was built by Mzwakhe Mofokeng’s Ntilane Constructions which has just completed 105 housing units in Moretele Local municipality and will be starting other projects within the province.

In appreciating the partnership of the two developers who had responded to her call for companies doing business in the province to plough back to communities, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono invited other companies and institutions to lend a hand towards addressing the housing backlog.

The Each-One-Settle-One Campaign was launched by Minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale and supported by provinces to assist government to achieve the millennium development goals to eradicate informal settlements by 2014.
