Eighty speedsters amongst them a motorist caught doing 157 kilometers per hour (Km/h) felt the pinch of women traffic officers after they were arrested for driving above the permissible speed limit on Wednesday.
The speed enforcement operations on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway in the North West Province are part of the zero tolerance special operations to commemorate women’s month.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison Desbo Mohono commends the women traffic officers from her department’s Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit in Bojanala Platinum District for the successful operation which netted the wayward motorists.
“Irresponsible driver behavior such as speeding accounts for untold misery, many road accidents and fatalities involving road users that have left many women as widows and many children orphaned with a huge impact on the country’s economy. Our women traffic officers have set the standard for excellence and zero tolerance that should be sustained to root out lawlessness on our roads,” says MEC Mohono.
The highest speeds clocked were 105km/h on an 80 km/h zone, 122 km/h on a 100 km/h zone and 157 km/h on a 120km/h zone.
The driver caught doing the highest speed was a 43 year old male who was driving a Volvo. He was caught outside Brits at the Bokfontein bridge and issued with an R800 summon.
Meanwhile, two women died in a crash three weeks ago at the Brits Plaza Tollgate after a speeding vehicle plunged behind their vehicle while four other road users were injured during a three vehicle pile-up on Monday evening after a light truck failed to stop at the Marikana Plaza tollgate their vehicle.
The milestone brings to 529 offenders brought to book by women traffic officers across the province since the special operations in support of the United Nations’ Decade for Road Safety and the National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP) started last week. NREP is aimed at reducing lawlessness and accidents on public roads.
