Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel has appointed two Deputy Commissioners to the Competition Commission today, to serve for a period of six months. The two new Deputy Commissioners are Advocate Oliver Josie and Ms Trudi Makhaya.
Both of them were part of the Executive Management of the Competition Commission with Ms Makhaya serving as Divisional Manager for Advocacy and Stakeholders Relations since 2012 while Advocate Josie was the Divisional Manager responsible for Cartels since 2011.
The appointments of the Deputy Commissioners made by the Minister followed the resignation of the current Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Commission, Mr Thembinkosi Bonakele, which takes effect at the end of March 2013. Ms Makhaya and Advocate Josie will act in the interim while Minister Patel commences a process to appoint one or more Deputy Commissioners on a longer term contract in line with Section 23 of the Competition Act, Act 89 of 1998.
Minister Patel says the interim appointments will ensure an uninterrupted service by the Competition Commission which has a critical role to play in advancing an inclusive economy, promoting competition, combating abuse of market power and supporting job creation and small business development.
