As part of government's pursuit for the smooth running of government fleet management services, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport is currently inspecting all government vehicles throughout the province today.
The objective of this exercise is to update the vehicle assert register of the province and validate that vehicles bought from Fleet Africa do exist and are in good condition. In doing so, an engine number and chassis number on the vehicles are verified on the provincial vehicle assert register.
The department has deployed different teams tto all districts to conduct this quality assurance exercise until tomorrow afternoon. As from the 1st of February 2012, the department took over the management of the provincial fleet function. So far, R241million has been paid for the buy - back of 1953 vehicles against a target of 1995.
A new trading entity has been established within the department with its own bank account. The government garage in East London is the "HUB" of the entity where all the purchasing, preparing and dispatching of the vehicles is done, while Port Elizabeth and Mthatha act as secondary bases for the entity servicing these two districts. Queenstown, Alliwal North and Mount Ayliff have satellite offices based at the Department of Transport offices to service other departments.
