Eastern Cape Transport welcomes new interns

In response to a government call for youth development, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport has welcomed 84 new interns at Departmental Head offices in King William’s Town on 2 April 2013.

This follows an announcement made by Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu during the presentation of her department’s 2013/14 policy speech at the Provincial Legislature. “As from 1 April 2013, we will have 84 new interns, who will be deployed to various directorates to gain work experience,” said MEC.

In welcoming the new interns, Human Resource Management Director, Ms Linda Bovana urged interns to make use of the opportunity granted to them. “This is an opportunity of like and you must learn as much as you can,” said Bovana. She added that they must implant what they have been taught at school and make a difference in their respective units.

The aim of the internship programme is to address skills shortage and expose young and unemployed graduates to the work environment and thus provide them with the necessary work experience.

The 84 interns will be placed Districts and Head Office under various Directorates based on their qualifications e.g.:

  • Risk Management
  • Finance
  • Human Resource Management
  • Human Resource Development
  • Transport Admin & Licensing
  • Information Technology
  • Communication
  • Traffic Control
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Transport Planning
  • Government Fleet Management Service
  • Public Transport
  • Road Safety.

During this 12 month period, the interns will be assigned to mentors who will be responsible for coaching, mentoring and supervision.
