Eastern Cape Transport inducts a new Audit Committee

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport held a successful induction of its new Audit Committee members at the Head Office in King Williams Town on Tuesday, 8 November 2011.

Following an Executive Council resolution taken in October 2010 to decentralise Shared Internal Audit Services and the Shared Audit Committee, the department has appointed its new Audit Committee for the next coming three years.

The Audit Committee will provide the department with an independent opinion on the state of internal controls, governance and risk management within the department by scrutinising reports from management, the Auditor-General (AG), Internal Audits as well as any other relevant parties.

The independence of the committee is therefore protected by the Public Finance Management Act and it can execute its duties without fear or favour.

In addition, the committee assesses the effectiveness of the department’s Internal Audit Unit to ensure that it performs its work effectively with minimum interference from management. They also monitor the ethical climate of the department to ensure that all employees act in an ethical manner.

It then provides a report to the department (HOD and MEC) advising on how any identified deficiencies can be rectified for the benefit of the department. This will assist the department to improve its operations and obtain a clean report from the AG.

The new Audit Committee members were appointed in May 2011, attended an induction workshop organised by Treasury in July 2011 and they held their first meeting on 1 August 2011. This Audit Committee consist of four members appointed on three year contracts.

The names of the new committee are as follow:

  • Mr Justin Emslie - Chairman
  • Mr Mike DuToit - Member
  • Ms Cynthia Marishane-Chuene - Member
  • Mr Luyanda Mangquku – Member
