As part of its concerted efforts to ensure employee wellness, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport Wellness Unit held a medical screening session for employees at its head office on Tuesday, 21 February 2012.
GEMS healthcare professionals were invited to attend and oversee the session were they discussed employee's individual health history and performed medical screening tests which were as follows:
- Blood Pressure
- Waist Circumference
- HCT (HIV Testing)
- Weight and Height with body mass index
- Blood Sugar and Cholesterol
- TB Screening and Testing
Each person was given a "Wellness Passport" that showed individual test results which were discussed personally with GEMS officials, they in turn gave advice so that people knew what steps to take next pertaining to the results they received.
Employees were also advised that they could take their particular Wellness Passport to their respective doctor’s if further medical tests need to be done and that they could keep it as a record for the next time that they attend a GEMS wellness screening event.
"Wellness is everybody's responsibility and it is important for each person to track their measurements so that they know whether they are improving or worsening", said Wellness Manager Sindiswa Magwebu.
