A total of 65 summonses were issued for various offences during an Arrive Alive Campaign roadblock conducted by Eastern Cape Department of Transport on the N2 near settlers Monument in Grahamstown on 16 December 2011.
The roadblock was held in conjunction with Grahamstown South African Police Service (SAPS), PG Glass, Netcare SNELCO, Metro AMB, Makanafire station and Crash Towing.
Three arrests were made for warrant of arrest, aToyota minibus was seized because of fraudulent License Disc and one driver arrested for reckless and negligent driving.
The objective was to see law enforcement linked to a PG Glass Safer than Safe road side promotion to communicate that:
- Law enforcers act in the interest NOT to the detriment of road users
- Your windscreen is an important safety measure that could mean the difference between life and death on impact
- PG Glass invests in the safety of the communities it serves
- Joint operations save money, man power and ultimately lives
The focus on:
- speeding
- checking of public transport (roadworthiness and overloading)
- driver fitness and most especially drunken driving.
- safety Breaks
- windscreens, Seatbelts and Cell phones
- visibility (Seen and be seen to pedestrians)
- road conditions in relationship to following distance, overtaking and speed
