Eastern Cape Traffic officers exceed their law enforcement target

Despite the continuous increase in road accidents, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Thandiswa Marawu salutes the good work done by provincial and municipal traffic officers by exceeding their monthly target in December 2011.

Since the start of the festive season operations on 1 December 2011, a total of 99 711 vehicles were stopped and screened by traffic officers on Eastern Cape roads.

As a result:

  • 18 900 notices have been issued
  • 203 vehicles have been discontinued or impounded, including 36 buses, 75 minibuses
  • 1078 arrests were made including 245 for drunken driving
  • 425 warrants of arrest were issued
  • 34 pedestrians were arrested.

“We are proud of this achievement as we have exceeded our monthly target of 85 000 vehicles. Each officer is expected to stop and check a minimum of 15 vehicles per eight-hour shift,” said MEC Marawu.

“As we enter the New Year’s weekend, we are going to intensify our traffic operations and I would like to warn our drivers that we have adopted a zero tolerance approach,” she added.

On 31 December 2011, MEC Marawu will lead an Operation Asihleki roadblock on the notorious N2 in the Tyityaba Junction outside Komga from 10h00 till 12h00. As it will be New Year’s Eve, scores of people are expected to rush to the beach front and other various locations to celebrate the countdown to the New Year.

The purpose of the roadblock will be to focus on:

  • Speeding
  • Checking of public transport (roadworthiness and overloading)
  • Driver fitness and most especially drunken driving.
  • Safety Breaks
  • Wearing of Seatbelts and use of Cellphones
