Two senior officials from the Presidential Hotline in Pretoria are on a two day visit in the Eastern Cape. The aim of the visit is to monitor the performance of local municipalities and provincial departments on their responses to Presidential hotline queries. The analysis that has been done recently shows a significant improvement in the performance of the Eastern Cape. In April 2010 the level of responses was 4% and the current level is 37%.
The focal point of the visit is on Health, Education, Human Settlements and as well as Local Government. This is motivated by the fact that most of the complaints received are mainly related to these departments.
Public Liaison Officers (PLOs) from various departments, delegates from the office of the Presidency and the Office of the Premier have jointly resolved on the following:
- There is a need to have courtesy visits to departments that are not doing well in as far as the levels of responses to queries made to the Presidential Hotline are concerned
- To have information days within the province to assist communities with information on development and service delivery
- To embark on a concerted drive to retrain Public Liaison Officers in the province.
- To lead an advocacy campaign to get departments to employ permanent PLOs as per the instruction of the president in 2009
- To have monthly meetings to analyse the performance of the province and benchmark on other provinces that are doing well.
