Eastern Cape Provincial Government welcomes arrest of former officials and business people over R20 million tender fraud allegations

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has welcomed the arrest of eight individuals including three former government officials and businesspeople linked to the R20 million worth tender corruption allegations for the procurement of temporary classrooms and furniture in the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality.

Those arrested are former employees of the provincial administration, who served in the Office of the Premier and Department of Education. The Provincial government applauds the swift work done by law enforcement agencies, which follows internal investigations conducted by Provincial Treasury and commits to cooperate fully with them.

The province is encouraged, this shows that its anti-corruption machinery is at work and great strides are being made to bring those who are alleged to be involved in fraud and corruption
to book.

The arrest happens just a few days after the International Anti-Corruption Day Commemoration on December 09, aimed to highlight and promote a coordinated approach by all stakeholders including government, law enforcement agencies, business, and civil society, in the fight against corruption.

“When those appointed to serve in public offices steal from funds that are meant to better the lives of the people, not only do they break the law, but they also break trust and confidence in the state. Corruption poses a great threat to the development and advancement of the people as well as the democracy of our country. As the Eastern Cape government, we remain resolute in fighting this cancer to its core and we appeal to everyone in and outside the public serviceto take part in rooting it out,” Premier Mabuyane said.
