The Eastern Cape Province today hosted a consultative session of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
In compliance with the norms and standards of the mechanism and as part of South Africa’s monitoring and evaluation obligations on the APRM, the country has tabled its first and second progress reports on the implementation of the National Programme of Action (NPoA) at the African Union Summit of Heads of States and Government (HOSG) of APRM participating countries in January 2009 and January 2011 respectively.
In his opening addressing the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Mlibo Qobashiyane, encouraged delegates to participate in discussions using the Peer Review is a measuring tool and also an opportunity for reflection, “measure your own contribution, in your own spheres”.
The MEC added that issues of corruption affected the political and social stability of a country. He also used the opportunity to remind delegates of their responsibility as citizens of a democratic state saying that the “greatest authority lies within the people in a democratic country”.
Discussions centred around four thematic areas, Democracy and Political Governance, Economic Governance and Management, Corporate Governance and Socio-Economic Development.
Within these thematic areas cross cutting issues were also highlighted, violence against women and children, crime, xenophobia, racism, diversity management, affirmative action and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE).
The provincial consultative summits will input to South Africa’s third progress report on the implementation of the National Programme of Action to be submitted at the African Union Summit of Heads of States and Government (HOSG) of APRM participating countries in May 2013.
