The Eastern Cape mourns the death of one of its daughter, a mother of a nation

Eastern Cape Premier, Miss Noxolo Kiviet, today expressed sadness about the passing away of the liberation struggle stalwart Mrs Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu at the age of 92.

She said, “The passing away of Mam’ uSisulu is an indication that the sun has set on the stalwarts of our liberation struggle who in the 1950s and 60s put up a commendable war of resistance against the domineering apartheid state. She and her generation were patriots without limits who sacrificed everything, putting themselves in harm’s way, to ensure that all the people of South Africa get to experience the benefits of a democratic state rooted in a culture of human rights.

“On behalf of the Executive Council, the provincial government and people of the Eastern Cape, we salute Mam’ uSisulu our daughter who left the dry and cracked hills and valleys of her Xolobe village, Tsomo, in pursuit of her professional ambitions, but responded to a greater call when she entered liberation politics. We salute her for having shown her mantle as the mother of the nation by playing a commanding role through the African National Congress Women’s League, Federation of South African Women and the United Democratic Front when our leaders were imprisoned or exiled.

“As we continue on the path of strengthening the democratic values that the likes of Mam’ uSisulu sacrificed their lives for, we hope that elected leaders would honour her memory by remaining humble and putting interest of the people first, specifically the downtrodden. This is what she would have wanted us to do.

To the family we pass our sincere condolences.
