MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls- August in partnership with SABC radio Umhlobo Wenene FM has launched 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children in kwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth. The kick-off of the 16 Days of Activism at kwaZakhele started with a march and a door-to-door campaign.

A huge crowd of marchers, with some men wearing high heels, showing their support in No Violence against women and children, under the theme: Put yourself in their shoes. The march was led by the MEC, the General Manager of SABC, Zola Yeye, who was amongst those wearing high heels, Men for change and Ministers representing different religious denominations and representatives of different religious groups.

The campaign focused on the role of the communities in curbing crimes against women and children and was also aimed at mobilising communities against crime hence the symbolic march to the area where the alleged rape took place.

The MEC handed over a fully furnished 2 bedroomed house, with an open plan kitchen, sitting room and a bathroom to the victim of rape, who was raped and impregnated at the age of 14 years. She is now 16 years old and lives with her two year old and her older brother.

The house is in Chetty.
