Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August launched the Joe Slovo month yesterday by handing over R2,5 million rand multi-purpose community centre in Ntsingizi village, Elliot dale yesterday. October is dedicated to Human Settlements month in the province, but has now been renamed after the first Minister of the department, the late Joe Slovo.
The multi-purpose community Centre, and sport field is part of the Elliotdale Breaking New Ground Policy that will see a massive 7 000 new homes built in Elliotdale. The department is also finalising construction of a sport field costing R4.5 million in Lower Bafumba village also in Elliotdale.
“Today we are here to fulfill the mandate of building amenities into our communities by handing over this Multi-Purpose Community Centre as part of the Elliotdale BNG which will see 7 000 new homes built in Elliotdale on completion of the project,” Helen Sauls-August said.
The Elliotdale project is part of a comprehensive informal settlements upgrading programme which has other 6 active Informal Settlement Upgrading projects totalling 69 200 number of units over the project completion period.
These are located in Zanemvula in Nelson Mandela Metro, Thorn Hill in Ndlambe, Siyanda in Mnquma and Ngangelizwe in King Sabatha Dalindyebo where government is relocating thousands of people from shacks into new settlements with social and economic amenities.
