Eastern Cape Legislature on water supply challenges

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature has been affected by water supply problems in Bhisho which is affecting the functioning of the legislature. The water supply problems began last week and have been affecting the whole of Bhisho area.

The Legislature has had to resort to using its water tank reserves from last week until it ran out this week.  The situation has compelled the management to take a decision to release staff members’ earlier than their normal knock off time due to challenges posed by the absence of water. All ablution and water reliant facilities within the institution are not usable due to this challenge and this situation is a potential health hazard.

The management decision is in compliance with the prescripts of the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment Act, where it says, “Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health and safety of his employees.

Enforcing such measures as may be necessary in the interest of health and safety; every employer shall conduct his undertaking in such a manner as to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that persons other than those in his employment who may be directly affected by his activities are not thereby exposed to hazards to their health or safety”.

The shortage of water supply is affecting the functioning of the institution and will advise the public once the matter has been resolved. The Legislature is liaising with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality to resolve the crisis.

The Legislature sends its sincerest apology to the public and Legislature community as whole for the inconvenience this prevailing situation may have caused.
