Women’s caucus condemns acts of despicable woman abuse captured in videos

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Women’s Caucus Standing Committee is in possession of two despicable videos depicting the most horrible acts of woman abuse.

One of these videos is of an elderly woman named Nosayinethi Manundu of ward 5 in the Majuba Village, Senqu Local Municipality (Joe Gqabi District) that was viciously attacked by a group of men accusing her of witchcraft. This incident took place on Sunday 15 March 2020. The video shows her burning hut and a group of men kicking and dragging her towards the hut. A report that has been confirmed by the ward councillor indicate that the elderly woman lost her life following the horrendous attack. “As the Committee we are disgusted by acts of brutality towards this defenceless elderly woman shown in this video, where a group of men are seen viciously attacking her. What is even more disturbing is to hear voices of women who should be at the forefront in her defence being the ones encouraging these merciless men to attack the elderly woman,” said MPL Bukiwe Fanta, Committee chairperson.

The committee commends the South African Police Services for their sterling work; two suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident.  It calls upon members of the community in which this horrible crime took place to come forward to the police with names of all the involved people. The committee further urges the law enforcement agencies to ensure that all those involved get the harshest sentences for their despicable actions.

In another incident also captured in a video a group of women are seen defending a woman who appears to be the wife of well-known and revered radio personality, who is also a co-host of a Sunday morning show on Umhlobo Wenene FM. In this video, a group of women accuse the radio personality of allegedly abusing his wife.

“As the Women’s Caucus we equally condemn all these acts of brutality directed at defenceless and innocent women in the strongest terms possible. The committee calls upon the management of Umhlobo Wenene to investigate the truthfulness of this video and decisive and urgent action to be taken against the accused should the allegation be proven it is true. Meanwhile, the investigation is taking place he must be put on precautionary suspension pending the outcomes of the investigation.

We have had enough of women, especially innocent elderly persons, murdered every year under the pretext of witchcraft and women that are dying at the hands of well-known and respected men. We are calling for the law enforcement to thoroughly investigate these two incidents captured in these two videos and for the justice system to act harshly against all the perpetrators of such heinous crimes as shown in the video,” said MPL Fanta.
