Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August has announced that the Provincial Department of Human Settlements has spent all of its allocated budget of R 2 159 218 b (100%) meant for human settlements development in the Province for 2014/15 financial year which ended last week.
The expenditure was on building houses, construction of Multi-Purpose centres, connection of water, sewerage lines (installation of services), and rectification of defective houses across the province.
The additional funding of R233 million from the National Department has increased the number of projected quality homes delivered by the year-end in March 2015. A total of 13 469 news houses have been completed, 3 721 defective houses rectified and 12 581 services installed across the province in the last financial year.
Beneficiaries of these houses includes disabled, elderly and women both in urban and rural areas. The department also handed over 2000 title deeds in Dordrecht and Indwe to confirm homeownership of beneficiaries. Another 7 429 title deeds were been transferred to municipalities of Mnquma, Mahlathi, Ngqushwa, Nxuba, and Sundays River. “This is as a result of the department changing its service delivery model and reorganising its internal functions to be service delivery orientated. The department has managed to improve planning issues and deal with poor performing municipalities and contractors with the introduction of “Turnkey Contractor” approach in delivery,” MEC Helen Sauls-August said.
