Eastern Cape Human Settlements prioritises rural areas

Life has changed for the better for thousands of Eastern Cape families who have benefitted from free housing subsidies provided by the Provincial Department of Human Settlements.

Between April and September, the department has built 5 946 quality houses and of these, 2 709 houses were built in the villages of Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo Districts – spending R1.096 billion from the department’s conditional grant.

The housing delivery prioritised the elderly, disabled, military veterans as well as people who qualify for free housing subsidies in 6 different regions of the province. For rural houses, water harvesting tanks and latrines were provided to ensure equity in provision of public services.

The department has also issued 2 488 title deeds which is security of tenure and ownership for beneficiaries. Further, 1 854 defective houses were rectified and 6 018 services were installed as part of connecting water and sanitation services for beneficiaries.

“The department is progressing very well in executing its mandate and delivering on the target it set at the beginning of the year. We are on course to meet and hopefully exceed our targets for this financial year,” said MEC Helen Sauls-August.

The department will build 13 100 houses this financial year, issue 7 000 title deeds and rectify 2 311 defective houses in the province.
