Eastern Cape Human Settlements Department warns public about housing scams

Provincial department of Human Settlements warns Eastern Cape People of housing scams claiming to be representing the department and charging large amounts of money for processing housing subsidy applications.

The department has not appointed any organisation to process housing subsidy application. Housing Subsidy applications for low cost houses are done through municipalities and there are no charges for processing applications.

Subsidy applications for the Gap Market (Finance Linked Individual Subsidy) are done at the banks and also have no charges. People are urged not to make payments to dubious scams claiming to be representing the department.

The department has been alerted to scams in East London, Butterworth where people have been duped to pay thousands of rands to buy low cost houses. The low cost houses are given to qualifying beneficiaries (people who earn from) -R3500) free of charge.
