Human Settlements projects in the EC walked away with awards at this years’ national Govan Mbeki Awards, held at the Sandton Convention Centre. Second Creek, a former dumpsite in Buffalo City that was transformed into a settlement won the Best Informal Settlements Upgrading Programme. The province also walked away with the Best Social Housing Project which is in Walmer Link in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August led the delegation to the awards where the province competed with other provinces. “For us as the provincial government we are happy with the awards, we see the hard work that has gone into these projects,” said MEC Sauls-August.
The purpose of the award is to showcase work done by the department with special emphasis to its programmes, promotes best practise in the delivery of the core mandate including outcome eight deliverables (Accelerating Housing Opportunities, Access to basic services, Improve Property Market, Efficient Utilisation of State Land). “The Awards also create a healthy competition amongst provinces in terms of delivery, as well as monitoring tool to ensure delivery,” added MEC Sauls-August.
In the Best Rural Project, the province won the first runner up position with the Elliotdale project. All the nominees were overall winners in the Provincial Govan Mbeki Awards held in April this year.
