The Department of Basic Education would like to clarify the status of Section 100 (1)(b) in the Eastern Cape.
In her address to the media on Tuesday 9 April 2013, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga stated that Section 100 (1) (b) intervention in the Eastern Cape has yielded encouraging results. “We received a full report about our intervention in the Eastern Cape. We went to verify the content of the report based on our interaction with stakeholders. We are therefore of the view that we need to downgrade our intervention from Section 100 (1) (b) to Section 100 (1) (a).”
It is against this background that Director-General Bobby Soobrayan clarified subsequently, that the Eastern Cape Education Department is still under administration. Mr Soobrayan went to the extent of explaining the official process that has to take place, through cabinet, for the withdrawal of Section 100 (1) (b).
The SABC reporter misrepresented the Minister’s statement completely, and opted to create an impression that the Director-General contradicted the Minister. The Minister notes with concern that it is the same journalist who consistently misquotes and distorts statements made by the department.
