Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula has announced the appointment of a new Superintendent-General, Mr Mthunywa Ngonzo

Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula has officially announced the appointment of Mr Mthunywa Ngonzo as the new Superintendent-General (SG) of Education. 

Announcing the appointment MEC Makupula said the recruitment process had netted over 20 good candidates from which the panel he chaired recommended finally to the Premier the appointment of Mr Ngonzo. 

Welcoming the new SG MEC Makupula said with nearly 50% of the provincial budget given to education the core business of curriculum development and delivery in the classroom with schools appropriately resourced with textbooks and budgets.  He said the gazetted norms and standards for funding of schools will be adhered to from 2013 onwards. 

Mr Ngonzo takes over the reins of the education department with a budget allocation R26.972 billion, nearly 90 000 administrators and educators, as well as over 1.9 million learners that are in 5 626 schools across the province.

The new Superintendent-General pledged to spare no effort or strength to ensure that the province's biggest investment of 45.5% of the equitable share is translated to better education outcomes. 

Mr Ngonzo welcomed his appointment as a "humbling expression of confidence by the leadership of the province". He says his role is defined and shaped by a few principles he is committed to follow the logical end which include:

  • "Effective leadership is everything to an institution and defines success
  • Policy implementation should be enforced to ensure compliance and success and therefore improve the systems for effective provisioning of education in the province
  • Learners are at the centre of any education development and success
  • Teachers are important catalysts in education success, parents and communities are fundamental in the education of their children and must be made to participate fully and actively
  • Labour stability is a necessary ingredient for conducive learning environment for our children".
